Family Volunteer Ideas for September
Service Ideas that Involve Kids & Teens
September is a very important month for giving back and helping others. With the 9/11 Day of Service, Hunger Action Month and Back to School season in full swing, there are many ways for your family to get involved, learn how:
Join the Celebration of Service in Washington, D.C. on 9/11: This year, in honor of the 15th anniversary of 9/11, AARP Foundation is challenging volunteers young and grown in the D.C., Maryland and Virginia areas, to help pack 1.5 million meals for hungry seniors, including senior veterans and first responders. Right in our own backyard, too many hardworking adults 50 and older are struggling to hold on to their jobs, homes, food supply, social connections and basic legal rights. On this day of service and remembrance, join AARP Foundation on the National Mall for the Celebration of Service Meal Pack Challenge and make a difference in the lives of those in need. 2. Hunger Action Month: Did you know 1 in 7 Americans struggles with hunger every day? 48 million Americans, including 15 million children, go to bed hungry every night – and there is something your family can do about it. Wear orange on Sept. 8th, Go Orange Day, to raise awareness about the issue of hunger in this country. Join FeedingAmerica.org to learn more about food banks in your community that your family can support, and find out if your school has a backpack program that needs volunteers (a program where kids from food-scarce homes receive a free pack of nutritional food for the weekend).
Hunger Action Month Reminder: Do you live in the D.C. area? Join the Celebration of Service Meal Pack Challenge on Sun. 9/11 to help pack 1.5 million meals for struggling seniors in the area. Learn more >
